Urnes Stave Church Portal Replica red cedar, 102"H x 55"W |
In 2006 I was invited by the Society for the Preservation of Norwegian Ancient Monuments to assist in the carving of a replica of a portion of the famous Urnes Stave Church portal for the Borgund Stave Church Visitor's Center. The center contains an extensive display regarding the origins and history of Stave Churches in Norway. This replica portal is now part of their permanent display. The carving was started in 2005 by Bjarte Aarseth and Boni Wiik and finished by myself in 2006. The wood is Norwegian pine, and remains unfinished at the top to show the transition from finished carving, rough carving, drawing, and rough timber.
