This
bed is a replica of one of several beds found in the Oseberg Ship.
Dating from 850 AD, this ship was excavated in the early 1900s
and is now on display in the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. This ship
is one of several found in large burial mounds in the Oslo fjord
region. As burial ships, they contained rich furnishings of wood
and textiles in an excellent state of preservation. The headposts
of the original bed were sculpted on the outer surface only while
the bed you see above has headposts carved on both sides.
