Viking Carvings by Jay Haavik

  About Jay Haavik

For twenty-five years, Jay Haavik has worked as a wood sculptor. His career began as a carver of art inspired by the Northwest Coast Native Americans. In the mid-1990’s he shifted his focus and began to combine the elements of Native art with that of his own Scandinavian heritage. This culminated in an exhibit, Cultures Connect! Seeking the Similar in Early Viking and Northwest Native Style Art. In recent years he has been producing art with an exclusive Viking flavor.

Haavik's success includes major art installations for REI’s stores in Seattle and Tokyo and the Puyallup Indian Reservation. His work appears in public and private collections and has been exhibited in the US and abroad. In 1995 he received a fellowship from the Artist Trust of Washington and in 2002 received a fellowship from the Norwegian American Foundation to study Viking carving, design and technique in Norway.
